Spanish nationality by residence

A foreign national who has resided legally and continuously in Spain for a certain period of time. As a general rule, this period must be 10 years, but there are cases in which it is reduced.

It is reduced to 5 YEARS if you have REFUGEE status.

2 YEARS, for nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, or people of Sephardic origin.

It is reduced to ONE YEAR in the following cases:

1. Anyone born in Spanish territory.
2. The one who did not properly exercise his right to acquire Spanish nationality by option.
3. Anyone who has been legally subject to the guardianship, curatorship with full powers of representation, custody or foster care of a Spanish citizen or institution for two consecutive years, even if they continue in this situation at the time of the application.
4. Anyone who, at the time of application, has been married to a Spanish citizen for one year and is not legally or de facto separated.
5. The widower or widow of a Spanish man or woman, if at the time of the death of the spouse they were not legally or de facto separated.
6. A person born outside of Spain to a father or mother, grandfather or grandmother, who were originally Spanish.
